Those jokes were the cheap shots, though, aimed squarely at the hazy public persona Franco has cultivated over the years. On one hand, he's the handsome, charming movie actor who appeared in Eat Pray Love, while on the other, he, well, appeared onstage in a dress at the Oscars while seemingly high. In many ways, he's a deeply complex public figure, one difficult to deconstruct. It would take a page master's thesis to fully unlock the cultural understanding fans and the media have of Franco — an act he would surely like and probably encourage.
When it was Franco's turn to offer his own thoughts on Sunday evening at the taping, the actor was happy to oblige.
